I read a statistic today in my NASM Personal Training text book, that 75% of adult Americans do not receive recommended 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise each day. When I read that I wanted to throw up. How can you not exercise for 30 minutes a day? And that’s just the bare minimum. What do you possibly do to avoid getting 30 minutes of exercise? These are the people who sit in line to make sure they get the closest parking spot to the door at Wal-mart. These are the people who are morbidly obese and make me want to put all of my groceries back onto the shelves at the store. These are the people who feel like it’s okay to ride around on those scooters instead of walking. These are the people who get lap band surgery because they are too lazy to work. These are people who try to get a free ride because they are “disabled,” because they cannot function from being too big. These are the people who suffer from severe health problems like heart failure, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, osteoarthritis, some types of cancers and lots of other chronic illnesses. These are the people who have such low self esteem from being so disgusted with themselves, who become suicidal even.

Getting just 30 minutes of exercise a day is soooooooo beneficial, I cannot stress it enough. It helps you sleep better at night, gives you more energy during the day, make you feel good about yourself, makes you feel happy (as Elle Woods said, Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy,”), helps your circulation, overall health and wellness, increases your bone density, increases your strength and stamina. I mean, the list goes on and on.

I just don’t understand it.. how could you NOT want to work out? I talk to so many females who want to lose weight or lose body fat. So just do it. There’s no excuses to why you aren’t doing it. So you are busy.. well if you really want to be thin, stop doing something else that you choose to do, and exercise. You don’t have to do it every night. You could squeeze it in before work or on lunch. You are afraid to go to the gym because you don’t know what you are doing. There’s trainers, there are websites to make friends to do workouts with. There are bootcamps. There are classes. It all really comes down to what you really want. Seriously.. it’s 30 minutes. There are 1440 minutes in a day and you can’t take 30 of them to do something good for yourself? Do you only want to live to see 65?

So maybe everyone isn’t like me and they don’t want to do the same workouts as I do. My boyfriend likes to run marathons.. I don’t want to run 26.2 miles. Everyone is different. To get a well rounded perspective of exercise ideas, I sent out an email to some friends today asking them what they would consider as a fun exercise to do for 30 minutes. Here are their ideas.

Sprinting, especially competitively
Stairmaster/ Spinning/ running/ elliptical/ treadmill/ rowing machine – or doing 15 minute intervals of different things
Having a dance party with friends
Dancing in a class like Zumba
Mountain biking
Walking with friends and/or dog
Playing soccer/tennis/ basketball with friends, or possibly as part of a community team
Boxing & kickboxing
Jumping rope
Road races
Going to a Crossfit or bootcamp class

What is yours?

Running! especially outdoors. I’ll need to reread this blog when I’m feeling lazy and like not exercising.

That is tough love!

I knew you’d put zumba in! 😉 also, you can get a variety of workouts On Demand-helllloooo free! It’s too easy NOT to do it.

Here’s an idea for those with limited time and/or motivation. When it’s lunchtime, instead of going to the corner place, walk the extra 10-15 minutes to get your lunch somewhere else. The trip there and back will net you ~20 min of walking, and you get a meal (hopefully healthy) as your reward.

Also, those that are able, can walk to work instead of taking the bus or T. Or just get off a stop before yours and walk the rest of the way. There are a lot of little tricks one can do that will add up to +30 min of exercise at the end of the day.

I agree with Leslie!!!

Mine is taking my furry four legged babies for a walk. There’s nothing better than seeing them excited to be outside. My dogs love walking with me.
